A statement condemning the killing of a UN staff member and the wounding of another by gunmen in Taiz
We condemn in the strongest terms the killing of the director of the field office of the World Food Program, Moayad Hamidi, and the wounding of an employee of the Food Program by gunfire in the city of Turbah, Taiz Governorate, and the injury of another citizen who happened to be at the scene of the crime.
This heinous crime comes in a series of violations that have claimed the lives of UN employees and employees of humanitarian organizations operating in Yemen, and this negatively affects the existing humanitarian situation in light of the need of more than 21 million people for aid.
As we express our deep condolences to the UN and the families of the victim, “Moayad Hamidi”, while expressing our hope that the wounded will recover, we stress the importance of the safety of the international teams working for civilians in Yemen to carry out their humanitarian tasks.
We call on the local authorities in Taiz to secure the rest of the international workers, quickly apprehend the perpetrators, bring them to justice, and not leave them with impunity. We also call on everyone to neutralize humanitarian workers from the conflict and stop any incitement and media campaigns that may target United Nations employees and agencies and workers on the humanitarian side.
